The Garrett ATX wasnt built to perform like a GPX. I own both detectors and also sell both detectors, which ar I owned the original Garrett ATX; the Recon. Identical, but with a mono coil. Garretts mine sweeper model for NATO and the military. I'd recommend saving yourself 2 grand, and find a Garrett Recon on Ebay for around $500-750. I have a beach where I pulled a lot of gold out of the water this summer and a lot of it was at the brink of detection on my CTX3030. In fact I had to drop the iron breakpoint way down into the iron range to even pick it up as non-ferrous. I believe the ATX has a ground balance feature, but I'm not very familiar with that product, the people over on the Garrett forum under metal detecting could probably better fill you in on it's strengths and weaknesses.
